Labyrinth Garden

The labyrinth at Mercy Center is a seven-circuit left-handed labyrinth.  It has been made with brick, stone, mulch and boxwood shrubs.  It is not a traditional labyrinth, but one that has been altered slightly with a larger center to allow reflection and meditation.  Our labyrinth overlooks Long Island Sound, which can be tranquil, stormy, blue or green and always full of life.

A labyrinth is a circular, winding path which leads to a center point.  Unlike a maze, which is designed to puzzle or mislead, the labyrinth is designed for a peaceful and trusting walk.  the path at times may seem to take you far from your goal, the center.  However, with trust in the journey and with faithfulness to the path, you will reach the center.

There are as many ways to walk the labyrinth as there are people who walk it.  The walk is often made in silence, with openness and receptivity to whatever arises in your heart, your thoughts, your imagination.

History of Labyrinths
Labyrinths have an ancient history pre-dating Christianity. Many were created with colored stones in the floors of cathedrals of Europe during the Middle Ages to be subsitutes for the great pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
